CABO VERDE 1855-1856 THE CHOLERA YEARS

"(...) in 1845, the island of Boavista had been hit by yellow fever, soon followed by a smallpox epidemic that left the island almost depopulated. Although not as deadly as the famines that, with relentless regularity, took the lives of thousands of Cape Verdeans, or like some diseases that the citizens had already become accustomed to living with - called earth diseases or carneiradas - epidemics had a devastating effect on populations, especially when they were unknown, as was the case with cholera, which until that fateful day had been far from the archipelago."

- Ana Cordeiro in the introduction to the aforementioned book.
